10 New York coffee shops in West Manhattan that you can’t miss

The number of options to get your caffeine fix in NYC is overwhelming, so to make it easier, here are 10 New York coffee shops in West Manhattan that are worth the visit.

Levain Bakery

Levain Bakery may be known for its baked goods, but its coffee matches in quality, and pairs perfectly with a sweet treat.

Famous for its chocolate chip and walnut cookie, Levain opened in 1995 when two triathletes, Pam Weekes and Connie McDonald, bonded over their love for baking. Now, Levain has multiple locations in New York City, as well as in Massachusetts, Maryland and Washington D.C. It also offers gift boxes for delivery, and even has its own line of products flying off grocery stores.

Black Press Coffee

Black Press thrives on great coffee and great service, teaming up with Brooklyn’s Parlor Coffee Roasters to provide guests with delicious flavors from Peru to Ethiopia and more. The coffee shop offers a variety of baked goods ranging from sweet and savoury croissants to different donuts, breads and cookies.

Named after a group of publications that reported ideas and accomplishments in underrepresented and communities barred from mainstream media, Black Press strives to be a safe and inclusive space for New York and its Upper West Side.

The Muffins Cafe

The Muffins Café opened its doors in 1993 and has left its mark on the city ever since. The staff has seen customers propose at their cafe over a cappuccino and bring their firstborns in for teething bagels. It’s seen Columbus Avenue be repaved and restructured, and most importantly, they’ve seen other cafes come and go while Muffins endured. Its consistency of excellent coffee, food and service through the years makes it one of the most well-loved coffee shops in the area.

Emphasizing on seasonal, house-made ingredients, from fresh bread and viennoiserie to made-to-order soups, salads and sandwiches, to even charcuterie boards and French pastries and gelato, Épicerie Boulud is not a cafe to miss.

Owned by none other than Chef Daniel Boulud, who moved to the US from Lyon, France, in 1982 and has become one of America’s culinary leaders, Épicerie Boulud serves coffee, breakfast, lunch and a rotating selection of hot plats du jour – all day. There’s also a full selection of beer and wine, tapas and fresh oysters.

The Sensuous Bean is tucked away on West 70th Street, and is a delightful little shop with shelves piled with knit-knacks for all your brewing needs. The space is small and crowded, but welcoming, and offers out-of-the-box coffee flavors like peanut butter and maple donut lattes, but the ginger raspberry tarts are what stole the show.

Solid State Coffee

Bringing a funky, 1970’s vibe to the Upper West Side, Solid State Coffee strives to make a positive global impact at every step of production, from the farm to the cup. Solid State was founded in 2020, and thankfully survived the pandemic because it’s ridiculously good.
